Mini case study
In 2008, a laptop containing approximately 175,000 client personal records belonging to a leading Irish company was stolen from an employee's car. The company reported the matter promptly to the Data Protection Commissioner and the follow-up investigation by the Commissioner decided the loss of the laptop did not breach the data protection rules since the laptop's hard drive was encrypted. There was no follow-up, naming or convictions. The company was fortunate it had the foresight to invest in encryption technology for its employees' laptops.
