I Can't connect to the VPN |
«« go back |
A client in Ballycoolin, Dublin contacted us. Every three weeks they would lose their connection to their VPN. We asked them whether they noticed any patterns to the problem, and they could not identify anything at all that might be causing it. For diagnostic purposes, we disconnected their Cisco firewall from their modem and we were immediately able to get an IP address.
We then reconnected the firewall to the modem. When we looked at the WAN interface, the firewall reported an IP address of 0.0.0.0. The firewall was unable to get an IP address from the DSL modem. We reset the Cisco firewall and renewed its IP address. A connection was finally made. But this was just a short-term solution.
From the client's statements, we had a feeling this problem would manifest itself again. We suspected that the IP address was being reset every three weeks by their ISP and this was the root cause of this problem. We contacted the ISP on their behalf and requested an internet service with a fixed IP address. On follow-up of this problem, the client reported the problem finally went away once they got a fixed IP address.
